As we saw in 2009, candy buffets, and dessert buffets will continue to be incorporated into many receptions. Yum!
Color tones for 2010 will include warm, bright, bold, and vibrant colors...red and hot pink are big, as well as purple. These colors along with the next trend are making for romantic, elegant and sophisticated weddings.
Vintage is very in....dresses, jewelry, black and white photographs, and accents.
Groom's cakes are making a comeback! Originally a southern tradition, grooms cakes are becoming commonplace and fun way to show off an interest or love of the groom.
Favors that have meaning...this might include a donation to a favorite charity, an item of local interest or meaning to the couple, or something representing the cultural or ethnic heritage of the bride or groom.
Bridesmaids choosing their own style of dress within one color, or shade...ensuring flattering, beatiful and comfortable bridesmaids on the big day.

I've found myself coming across unique gift registries here lately...of course there is always the fabulous crate & barrel, restoration hardware, macy's, target, and more...but some couples might have everything they need to start their life together...

A unique gift registry might be a good option...here are some options that I have come across lately:

Locally:
The IMA in Indianapolis
They have a gift shop that has a wide array of items, and they've started a gift registry!
Some great gift ideas, jewlery, hostess gifts, holiday presents, and more as well.

Different Drummer in Bloomington
Most people in Bloomington are aware of the Different Drummer, the cute little shop just off of College Mall Rd. They have started a gift registry program as well...cute home accessories and more await...

Other online options for different types of gifts:
Donations...
Many couples are couples are choosing not to give favors at their wedding reception, but are instead choosing to give a donation in honor of each guest.
Charity Gift Certificates, gives couples options, as well guests to donate in the couple's honor
Most specific charities have similar giving options as well.
The IDoFoundation also does this...

For the honeymoon...
Honeymoon Wishes...this website is a service that allows you to register for pieces of your honeymoon or destination wedding and guests can purchase them for you (a masssage, champagne, a night on the town, a romantic dinner, car rental, etc).

Send Us Off...this site has a similar idea to Honeymoon Wishes, but it can provide more "outings" and things for you to experience together such as a hot air balloon ride, a guided tour, riding a camel, etc.

You can also consider unusual registries...such at local nursery for plants, trees, and shrubs for a new home or art at a local gallery. Likely, many places wont have registry programs in place, but many will work with you to set something up for you and your guests.

top 5 favorite cakes: David from Blu

This cake is one of my all time favorites. In part because it's beauty really comes from nature and the bold colors the flowers bring. In creating it, I discovered that it can be nice to step away from the traditional shapes wedding cakes often have. This cake represented the couple perfectly. They had a small reception catered in the back yard of their lovely home surrounded by friends, family, and fresh flowers. Simple elegance to be sure.

This cake was part of a celebration in IU's Alumni Hall. It's a grand hall with very tall ceilings, length, and a large stage. It can be a daunting space to decorate but Bari Kuhlman, IU Memorial Union's coordinator accomplishes the job each and every weekend. We created this cake to fill the space. It was the first thing guests saw when they arrived. It stands out initially because of it's size the varying heights of the different tiers but the real focal point is the hand made chalice and flowers on top. Hours and hours went in to creating this non-traditional topper made of sugar. The off whites and ivory go very well with the burgundy colors that help fill the room.

This was just a beautiful cake for a beautiful couple whom have become regulars at our chocolate studio. The truth is the dark brown color of the chocolate ganache makes just the perfect backdrop for the Fall colors of the burnt orange and yellow orchids and lilies. Sometime the challenge we have in designing the cakes is to not interfere too much with the natural beauty surrounding us! This is one such example. This cake was organic and vegan.

I love this cake for one simple reason, the hand-painted calla lilies on the side. One our cake designers, Scott Jackman, is a painter who translates his artwork into edible sugar couture. The cake highlighted the understated beauty of the table decorations created by Artful Blooms - also red and white calla lilies.

I have been joking since we started creating cakes 7 years ago that I can't wait to make a cake that requires a ladder to get to the top. This is it. We were asked to create a one-of-a-kind cake for a bride and groom from Indy who held their reception in the atrium of the West Baden Hotel. I can't think of a more grand setting. The cake had to meet the expectations of the space. Over 8 feet tall, this cake fed almost 400. We had a scouting mission to initially investigate the space. We took elements from the surrounding decoration, colors, columns, stained glass, to make this cake that looks like it belongs here.

I had lunch today with Angela Claxton, owner of lemonseed&co out of Shelbyville.
I’m in love with her work…wedding invitations, print materials for weddings, and invitations for every other type of event as well {not to mention beautiful stationary}. Everything is very custom {think design, colors, papers, envelopes!}, high quality, and she’s awesome…another woman doing what she loves!

Linens & Chair Covers, oh my!

I'm excited to be working a lot more with linens for my clients {and others that just need assistance upgrading or selecting} linens for their wedding or other special event! It's been a lot of fun and I think this is going to continue to be a great addition for my clients.

I'm pumped to be working with Chair Covers & Linens out of Michigan. Most of their products are American made and many are handmade right there.

They have linens of every size, but also chair covers for many different types of chairs and sashes. Their website includes some great tools to see the entire picture for an event, as well as galleries. I've said many times and will continue to do so, chair covers and great floor length linens are two things that can make a big impact on a room and decor.

mr + mrs stryker!

Katie and Kevin were married in Bloomington on October 3. It was a perfect day, Katie was gorgeous and Kevin wore his uniform from the Coast Guard.

Navy blue and platinum were perfect for the fall day...

Loved the large head table in the middle of the Tudor Room at the IMU...all of the bridal party and their dates were seated there with Katie and Kevin.
Katie did some great touches, such as this table so they could sit together, a fun appletini ice luge, and a delicious customized dinner with food stations.

Larissa Shroeder, a family friend of the bride's and high school friend of mine did the awesome floral.

It was so fun working with Katie and her mom on the wedding, and the bridal party was so great! It was one great party! Congratulations Mr and Mrs Stryker!

Customizing Your Wedding

Today, we feature some additional and unique ways you can customize your wedding and bring out your unique tastes and loves…

Have you ever considered creating a signature drink that matches your color scheme? A drink that satisfies your taste and color palette! Love it!

How about a dessert bar for the bride and groom with a sweet tooth! This goes beyond the traditional cake and expands into several items that can reflect what you both love.

Or beyond desserts, how about other food you both love for a "midnight snack" (pizza from the local place you love, cheeseburger sliders, or milkshakes!) or incorporated into the dinner. Consider a mashed potato bar, sushi, different ethnic foods, or favorite junk foods.
As I told one recent bride, its your day, your dinner! Don't mind what your guests might like or not, what do you and your groom want? What reflects you two?

Lastly..tired of cluttered tables at weddings? What about putting the place card on the back of the chair? This adds some fun visual interest to the chair, is cute, fun, and different! {picture above}

A beautiful sash could also be incorporated. I think this would also be great for showers, the rehearsal and other events!

You can also customize your wedding, by doing it "your way" at the reception. Dance first, cut the cake in between courses, don't have a formal meal...in the end it is your day and you should do it how the two of you want!

We've been working on Megan and JD's wedding this weekend, and have also come across some awesome ideas and items on the web. Here's what we're loving now:

Cute clutch from Etsy {above}! We think it would be great for bridesmaids or for yourself...fun, classic, great colors, and a bit unexpected. Also love that there is a small pocket on the inside for smaller items. Check them out at AngeeW's shop here.

Cupcakes! Yes, cupcakes have been around forever, but we're loving these presentations and using them for different events besides the wedding. Both of these first images are from Vanilla Bake Shop in Santa Monica.

Cupcakes can be a great option and the presentation can be just beautiful!

This {below} is from Pink Cake Box and was designed for a bridal shower. Loving all the sweets--cake, cupckaes and cookies! That's our kind of shower! {Their blog has great ideas! Check out for awesome ideas and designs!}

We've been thinking about table numbers and came upon this via the Southern Weddings Magazine blog {love them!, love southern weddings!}, check it out to start your wheels turning about great table numbers for your wedding!
Lastly, keeping along the theme of sweets, I came across this company recently...they specialize in renting wedding cakes! That's right...why not save money and rent the tiered wedding cake that you'll cut for that special photo opp and use sheet cakes to serve to guests. something blue: friends

{Our guest blog today is by Sarah from the "I do" chronicles...enjoy! }

This idea came to me as I sat in the passenger seat of Tricia’s car pondering HOW on earth to choose a wedding party from my most incredible group of good friends. So I guess, it’s fitting that she asked me to guest blog on this topic.

Instead of embroidering my wedding gown with blue thread or donning blue shoes, I asked 13 amazing women to be my "something blue.” Blue is, perfectly, a bride's symbol of loyalty and fidelity.

I sent invitations, each with a handwritten note of thanks for our sincere friendship, asking each woman to “stand up with me in spirit” by wearing a “token of blue.”

My mom and I hosted a Something Blue Brunch in their honor, at which the ladies received embroidered handkerchiefs and spent the morning laughing, telling stories, and shedding sentimental tears. Then we packed up mimosas to go, and headed to pottery-painting. I now have a treasured set of mugs, bowls, and a creamer and sugar painted by my dearest friends.

Our programs featured a small passage about true friendships and listed each woman’s name. Some wore brooches, some wore beads or wraps, others bought dresses. They all looked beautiful in their blue!

Most importantly, for me, each person was able to give of herself in an individual way, whether that meant visiting the hair salon on the day-of, meeting for lunch on Friday, toasting with an “Ode to Sarah” at the rehearsal, or sending heartfelt cards or books in the weeks leading up to May 2 … the list goes on. I was blown away.

As the invitations said, I carried them with me in the months leading up to the wedding and most definitely on the day of. And, thanks to my sisters’ thoughtfulness, I now carry their love with me in the form of perfectly unique mugs filled with warm coffee.

top 5 favorite bouquets: Andrea from Peppertree

What most people think of when they think of the change in seasons, is weather. This impacts not only the clothes you wear (especially if you live in the Midwest or Northeast) but also what flowers are available on a month to month basis. In my “Top 5” I’ll review my favorite bouquets for every season as well as my all time favorite, for any season.

WINTER
Many people think winter is a very difficult season for flowers, but that isn't entirely true. Many flowers are available and most beautiful in the winter. Here are some of them: Anemone, Daffodil, Heather, Ranunculus, Sweet Pea, Tulip, & Viburnum.

This bridal included white anemonies, white freesia and white lisianthus accented with loops of beargrass. The bride also wanted me to include a special pin for her grandmother.

SPRING
Spring, as summed, is the season of plenty. Everything seems to be in bloom and its no mystery why it's the favored time of the year for weddings. Some of the flowers available in the spring are: Anemone, Daffodil, Hyacinth, Iris, Larkspur, Lilac, Lilly of the Valley, Narcissis, Peony, Ranunculus, & Tulips.

This bridal includes of my favorite flowers for Spring, the peony. There is just something special about a peony and I can hardly resist including it in my May and June weddings. As well as the peony, roses in champagne and off white also compliment the simple but timeless color scheme.

SUMMER
Summer brings about bright colors and hearty varieties. One thing to be sensitive about in this season, please ask your florist what varieties will be least susceptible to the hot weather, especially if you are having an outdoor wedding. Some flowers I would suggest for this season include: Bachelor's Buttons, Cosmos, Dahlia, Daisies, Delphinium, Gladiolus, Hydrangea (although they can be difficult in direct sunlight), Larkspur, Ranunculus, Scabiosa, Stock, Sunflower, Tuberose, & Zinnia.

All of the colors of Summer, these bridemaids bouquets include purple lisianthus, green roses, orange mini calla lillies, orange and red dahlias and green cymbidium orchids. I love being able to work with bright colors in the summer.

FALL

Although Fall is one of the more difficult season to find a variety of flowers locally, it’s my favorite. I love the rich colors that seem to be everywhere. Although I like stepping out of the box with color and shape, I can’t help myself to not use browns, oranges and reds in a fall bouquet. Fall flowers include: Amaranthus, Chrysanthemums, Cockscomb, Cosmos, Dahlias, Delphinium, Hydrangeas, Scabiosa, & Zinnia.

Gerbera Daisies, scabiosa, hypericum berry and dahlias created the bulk of this bouquet with a few chocolate cosmos thrown in for drama. The tone on tone color scheme never gets old.

ALL YEAR

You might be surprised and the amount of wedding flowers that are available all year round. Here is a list: Alstomeria, Aster, Bouvardia, Calla Lily, Carnations, Chrysanthemum, Delphinium, Freesia, Gardenia, Gerbera Daisy, Gladiolus, Gloriosa Lily, Iris, Larkspur, Lily, Lisianthus, Orchid, Rose, Stephanotis, Stock, & Veronica.

I know it’s no fun, but my favorite flower is still a rose. There are applications I don’t like them in, particularly corsages, but they just make a beautiful bouquet. There is something so utterly classic about an all rose bouquet, nothing beats it. The best part is that you can have one any day of the year.

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Today we're featuring some fun blue items...cakes and flowers. Almost every bride has both of these things, have you considered bringing blue into these aspects? We started prepping for today by focusing on the flowers, the bouquet the bride carries down the aisle could have blue in it or a blue ribbon. But the color can be carried in additional ways (such as cakes).

I'm seeing blue in lots of weddings right now..from navy (for fall and spring weddings!) to tiffany blue. There are so many possibilities.

I came across these neat floor decals a few weeks ago while looking for something for a bride and have been meaning to post about it...love it!

While lighting effects {"gobos"} are awesome, they can be very expensive and be part of a larger lighting package that some couples can't afford.

These decals can be put on dance floors and are much more affordable than a lighting package. They are made to be "low-stick" and should not damage floors. {Of course check with your venue to see if you can affix a decal before you order.}

Continuing the "something blue" post from last week on shoes, today we feature blue accessories. More fun options!

As a side note (that I probably should have mentioned last week), brides have traditionally worn or had something blue dating back to an Old English rhyme: "Something Olde, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, a Sixpence in your Shoe." The blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity.

The Indiana Roof Ballroom in Indianapolis was perfect for this couple. They truly ended up with their dream location after some glitches with their first vendor...an example of lemons turning into lemonade! Black and white classic elegance was throughout the room, and made for a perfect evening that this couple personalized perfectly for them!

Gabie says:
"It was also important to me that we disregard tradition to make the day fit for us. I had both of my fathers walk me down the aisle. We were married by a close friend of ours and wrote our own vows. I had two father-daughter dances, and insisted that Dave dance with my mother and I with his father."

I love this! Those personal touches that make the day yours are wonderful...and those things that you will remember forever.

One of their favorite moments from the day was the walk to the hotel at the end of the night. Gabie says, "It was a combination of pure relief and romance!"

Gabie threw in this piece of advice for newly engaged couples...

"Get help! Having someone (a friend, relative, or hired coordinator) manage the logistics of the day really allows you to enjoy it. Don't forget, the wedding isn't the end, its only the beginning!"

Even though it hasn't really felt like summer, especially summer in Bloomington here lately (I'm not complaining! Its been wonderful), I love these summery ideas (Summer Good Things) for weddings from Martha Stewart.

From sorbets, to ice creams, cold drinks and other summer inspiration (think sea shell bouquets)...these ideas are great. I think many are actually do-able too which makes them extra-wonderful (her how-to's and recipes...amazing!)!

I think its worth a conversation with your caterer, baker, coordinator or maid of honor about how you can bring the best of the season, and some fun, personalized touches to your big day.

Saturday was a great day all around! Ryan and Andrea's wedding was perfect and so much fun. Their friends, bridal party and family were all awesome. Here are a few pictures of the IU Auditorium with the fun and summery bright colors of pink and orange in the Foyer and bright green in the Hall of Murals.

The floral was beautiful from Artful Blooms, including some great creative touches and gorgeous bouquets.

Nick from Cake and the Caterer did the cake. It was delicious!

Oh, and for those that were following my step count on Twitter...the total for the day was...drumroll please...28,606 steps!

I have talked to brides (and we all know stories) of brides who look and look, second guess and think about dresses. Reflections...

As I reflect on the amazing couple I met with yesterday who just recently got engaged, Laura, a dear friend who is starting a new adventure in Boston, and on the funeral I'm getting ready to leave town for, a quote I recently saw in O Magazine comes to mind. So often in life we dive in, head first to the great unknown, excited, a little scared, perhaps anxious, hopeful, or sad. But, we do go forward, one step at a time...I think this quote captures what so many women (and men for that matter) feel often...

Sorry I've been MIA for a few days...or a week! Time has gotten away from me...

Jon and I took a quick trip to see his family in Louisville (yum, homemade meatballs!), my sister and her husband visited for July 4th weekend, the baby robins were born (or hatched I guess!) on our back porch and Jon and I have had some time to enjoy summer! Its been nice...though I have thought about this blog and weddings (a lot!) and I am getting back in the swing of things...

I agree with this bride who blogged for The Bride's Guide (one of my favorites!, from the editors of Martha Stewart Weddings)...in the end it is the details that you think about a lot...keep close track of those ideas from early on in your engagement. Its worth dedicating space to in your wedding binder or journal as she mentions. Check it out here.

Wedding Bee is looking for new bloggers ("New Bees"). If you have a unique perspective, willingness to share details, be open and write for them..they are accepting applications. I know a few of my future brides (and many of my past ones) would be excellent! Check it out!

I recently came across Magpie Designz and ordered a couple of necklaces for newly married friends and new moms. They are perfect! Mapie Designz features personalized, hand stamped jewelry. I love the originality and sentimentality that comes out in every piece (they are also packaged in a cute eco-friendly pouch). Already Behind?

I chuckled a little when I got this e-mail and my heart also went out to this bride-to-be. She captures 100% what so many brides feel...

I have done absolutely nothing wedding related, and I’m starting to freak out a little since it’s already been a month since we got engaged!....I started looking at different things online (colors, centerpieces, announcements, etc.) and got overwhelmed and had to stop. I put a semi-fake date in on theknot.com of 5/15/10 at the beginning of May, and it told me I was already behind on at least 6 things for something that was over a year away. (!!!) I know a lot will depend on the date we choose, and the date we choose will depend on venue availability, and so on. I honestly don’t even know where to start. People tell me I need to by a wedding organizer book, and I haven’t even gotten around to doing that yet. (Can you tell I was never meant to be an event planner?! :-)

She's not alone, right?

I had to post this because so many brides feel this and it's okay. I also wanted to say that it can get overwhelming with the approx. 272,000,000 (that's million) google hits for "wedding" and the mountain of information.

My thoughts....Don't necessarily start with theknot.com and "googling" as it is an uphill climb that can feel like too much. What do you want? What have you dreamt of? What are your gut instincts? Think about those things first and search out specific information on the web in due time...as well as ask for recommendations from friends, vendors and recent brides.

While of course I think perusing many related wedding websites and blogs for a little distraction is fun and necessary :-) ...when you are in the early stages it can be a little much. You are searching out for tid-bits of information in a vast ocean.

My advice to this bride, and others like her...take a breath, remember what matters most, and enjoy this process! It's such a fun and special time!

The Night Before the Big Day: The Rehearsal Dinner

The night of the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner can be so fun and meaningful.
Generally those in the bridal party and participating in the service are at the ceremony rehearsal learning about the “geography” (as one local minister puts it) for the next day. I see a lot of brides that suddenly realize at the rehearsal when they are about to “practice” walking down the aisle, that they are in fact getting married the next day. I think the rehearsal is special, and also worth capturing in photos either by your photographer or a friend. And after the "geography lesson" everyone shares a meal together (generally hosted by the groom’s family), a time to get to know each other better, and for the couple to say some words of thanks if they so wish.

More and more, rehearsal dinners are including many out of town family and guests, to welcome them to town and give them time to see the couple and others before the next day. I really love this…it adds to a fun and festive atmosphere to the night before. And, why not think outside the box for the rehearsal? Do something different than the next night…perhaps, a luau or honeymoon theme, a barbecue, an outdoor, pool side venue, or other theme or location that has meaning to the couple.

Consider these options:
Eagle Pointe in the Bloomington area, though it is a short drive, it would be worth it…a great pool-side terrace, fun atmosphere, good drinks and a space that could be quite different than the next night. {Pictured above is the Eagle Pointe Terrace.}

Barbecue in the backyard. Is your fiance from Texas where barbecue is king? Does your family love flavorful, smoked chicken, ribs or pork? Explore options to host a casual barbecue.

A Mexican fiesta…almost anywhere!

FARM Bloomington, for great sophisticated local food in a more casual atmosphere, in the heart of Bloomington. They have the Root Cellar which has several space available for groups of different sizes.

The IMU...if you are not having your reception at the IMU, or even if you are!, why not consider it for the rehearsal dinner? It's in the heart of campus, is beautiful and has many great options and room for personalization.

Grazie, are you honeymooning in Italy, did he fix Italian for your first date? Grazie combines great food and wonderful wine in downtown Bloomington in their private dining space.

Also, if you don’t want to go all out on favors for the next day, why not consider a meaningful small favor for those that are with you the night before? A tree they can plant, a donation in their honor, if sweets are your thing maybe personalized cookies or a small box of chocolates from local favorite Blu, or even a favorite Oliver Winery bottle of wine. My advice is to keep it personal, keep it fun, and think outside of what you are doing the next day.

A big Congratulations to Eric and June who got married where they met, at DePauw in Greencastle! It was a pleasure and honor to assist them. Everything turned out beautifully in a tent on East College Lawn...black and white with touches of green.

Awesome candy buffet...not to mention the amazing dinner buffet provided by Gail Smith from the Almost Home Restaurant.

The ceremony was also perfect, the church bells ringing before June walked down the aisle. The unity candle brought me to tears as her dad and stepmom sang. It was so special...

it takes a village...

On Saturday night Derek, Leigh-Ann's father, said, "Things happen...but it's how you handle them that matters." That's very true. Something always happens, and it takes the team to pull through and make the ceremony, reception and all aspects of a wedding perfect, just how the couple had dreamed.

Yesterday I reflected on how it takes a team to pull off a wedding. For example, a few vendors:

the florist--truly bringing a bride's vision to life with the floral

the photographer--capturing every special moment to keep for a lifetime; staying in close touch with me through the day to make sure we're set on timing and they are ready for those important moments {to left, Morgan capturing the cake cutting Saturday)
the venue staff--bringing physical elements of the event together, keeping guests safe and assisting when needed to execute the events of the evening
the caterer--the food! the meal and cake are often times really important to the couple (especially the groom). sometimes the food is never remembered, though sometimes guests walk away remembering the food, the customized menu that reflects the couple and is prepared, plated and served flawlessly. the caterer often times handles linens alongside me and the couple...linens can really transform a room
the music -- the added detail that sets the tone of the event...during the ceremony and the reception. (see my previous post about G and LA's wedding...keeping the party going all night long) alongside food, guests also remember if the dance floor was full and the night was fun

A quick look at Geoff and Leigh-Ann's team from June 6:

Karen, Artful Blooms -- worked very closely with Leigh-Ann, her mom, and me, to take Leigh-Ann and Hilda's breath away when they walked into the room for the first time. Seeing Leigh-Ann smile when she first saw her bouquet was awesome!

Morgan, Morgan Matters Photography -- so fun to work with, able to capture every moment, tear, and laugh.

IU Auditorium Event Staff -- I cannot say enough good things about the professional and student staff at the Auditorium. They are an amazing group of people...

the IMU Catering Staff -- taking the extra time to customize a flavorful and delicious meal for Geoff and Leigh-Ann alongside impeccable service with a smile on their face...also willing to go the extra mile to be part of the team...

Brett, the Dance Machine -- as I said yesterday, Brett can easily gauge the crowd and knows how to keep the party going all night long. Brett pays attention to all the details and works closely alongside me to execute the evening.

And, I am blessed to call these vendors and outstanding professionals colleagues and team members. It takes a team to make it happen and I am lucky enough to coordinate weddings with professionals that are truly amazing, and part of a team. Not only those listed here but so many of the vendors in Bloomington. I often spend a lot of time confirming, communicating, and double-checking with these vendors-- I can be the piece of the puzzle that brings them together. I also handle the problems when things don't go perfectly. But it takes all of us, doing our job, to execute the day as a bride has dreamt since she was 12.

Leigh-Ann and Geoff's Wedding!

Leigh-Ann and Geoff and their 200 guests had an amazing day yesterday. It was so fun assisting them and the day turned out perfectly. I wanted to share some pictures...

And, this was 1:00 a.m....it was a great party. Brett Anderson from Dance Machine was the DJ and kept it going all night long.

They broke into the IU fight song after the sparklers! So fun!

Congrats Mr & Mrs Cochran...have fun in Aruba!

The Current Project...

I've just finished up my sister's baby shower invitations and thought I'd share. I carried Amy and Ryan's pink and sage green colors into the invites and used adorable paper with baby feet, as well as sparkly, diamond brads to close the cards and bring out some of Amy's personality. Though weddings are my first true love, I am looking forward to doing more events and related elements outside of weddings including private parties, non-profit events and smaller things like showers. I have learned that I love events and coordination, no matter the event. I am enjoying a few current projects away from weddings and am looking forward to adding more in the future...assisting more clients, who truly become friends.

"I knew I wanted lots of decor at my wedding, and my budget just wasn't cutting it."
I have grown accustom to this answer. As a bride who decided to have a destination wedding, people tend to ask why? Fair enough. Truly, my budget was not covering what I needed or wanted on one of the most important days of my life. As a wedding designer myself, I had to go through my priorities list. Many of you have been asked when on a budget, what is most important to you? Decor was number one for me, music, location. These things however can be quite expensive and when you pair these with a gigantic guest list--well let's just say I needed to quadruple my budget.

After a long talk with my fiance, we decided to have our wedding in the most beautiful place we had ever been together--Estes Park. It is majestic. So we called our parents and told them we were having our wedding in Colorado and a big party back home in Bloomington. That's what we did. It was the best of both worlds. We shared our day with our closest friends and family, we had enough money in our budget to actually have lots of decor, and we had ANOTHER day to celebrate with all our friends and family! I couldn't have made a better choice.

If you find yourself compromising on everything, I suggest looking into this. I stayed pretty much within my budget, and I got to have my wedding in a beautiful location. With the internet, you can really plan a wedding anywhere. Just think...a champagne toast in Paris AND a beer with your college friends in Bloomington!

What’s in a Name?

Since I started my business I’ve gotten a lot of questions about the name and where it came from. Today is a fitting day to explain I think…

I named the business after my mom. Her middle name was Lillian, and ironically she really didn’t like it. In fact, I don’t think I knew it was her middle name until I was 11 or 12. She was always 110% supportive of me and my early thoughts that I wanted to do wedding & event planning. I can remember a specific conversation with her in early 2005 where she encouraged me to learn more and see where it goes, so I thought it was perfect and fitting to, in a way, name it after her. I also wanted to convey the personal side and personal care and attention I put into working with every client, thus love, lillian was created.

Well, I think she would be proud today—seeing the number of brides and families that I help each year, as well as coordinating other special events, working hard, yet doing what I love. My mom passed away in May 2005, and today would have been her 56th birthday…so today I remember her, a tear in my eye but also chuckling to myself about the laughs and memories.

This song has come to mean different things to me—but here are lyrics to “My Wish” that capture the support, encouragement, and love that my mom (and my dad) both always showed to me and my sister…I think this truly was her wish…

Great wedding yesterday--Brandy and Curtis! They are a sweet, high-energy, thoughtful couple and their wedding and reception reflected them perfectly. Finally….information on Bloomington specific weddings. Sorry for my delay, things have been very busy lately! Food for thought this Friday:

1,519 weddings in the Bloomington market in 2008
Forecasted 1,532 weddings in 2009

Average Spending in the Bloomington market:
$21,596 in 2008
$20,194 forecasted in 2009
It is forecasted to increase again in the next few years reaching almost $23,000 by 2014.

Compared to Average US Spending:
$21,814 in 2008
$20,398 forecasted for 2009

Interesting statistics. I was surprised that average Bloomington spending was as high as it was. I thought there might be a greater difference. It will be interesting to see if these numbers change as the year goes on.

The Cost of Weddings Today

Happy Monday everyone (and happy wedding week Sarah (that's her and Patrick above))! Thought this might be interesting for readers today...

The Indy Star has an article on its front page today about weddings and couples cutting back their budget due to the economy with some tips. Click here to read the article.

Also it states that the average US wedding will be $20,398 this year (decreasing again this year). Bloomington's average has been below the US so I expect that the Bloomington average will decrease as well.

I'm going to look into this area's average and will try to post it this week.

Local Vendor: Grise Photography on Engagement Photos

Today I'm excited to be debuting local vendors in the Bloomington area as guest bloggers. I'm starting with a great photographer who I've been fortunate to work with on fun weddings in the past and am looking forward to working with her again this summer, Jenny Grise of Grise Photography. She's very talented and provides tips on Engagment Photos here today...thanks Jenny!

I recommend choosing solid colors that work with your skin tone/eye color. Black is always good, as is chocolate brown and other dark colors. Jeans look great in pictures, especially darker washes, and be sure to compliment one another! As Stacy & Clinton say on one of my favorite TV shows "What Not to Wear", "You don't have to match, you just have to 'go'". :-)

There are many amazing spots in Bloomington for engagement photos! There's the campus, of course (one of the Top 5 most beautiful in the country for a reason!), but don't forget to look beyond this to places like Oliver Winery (gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous!) and downtown Kirkwood. I love the contrast of beautiful couples and industrial locations, so even graffiti-filled alleys can look totally great in pictures.

Tips:
1) Just be yourself! It's up to your photographer to help you feel comfortable in front of the camera, but it's up to YOU to truly be yourselves. You know who you are and how you are together. Natural smiles & laughter look best! No fakes!
2) Think of it, not as a portrait session, but as a casual date with your fiance(e) (and oh, there happens to be someone following you around with the camera). Take a walk together like you normally would. Bring your pets if you've got them.
3) Be up front with your photographer before your session about the kind of photos you'd like. Be sure your photographer matches the style you're into. Artsy & creative or more traditional. Send along some photos before your session of other engagement sessions you liked. This is not insulting to your photographer, but actually quite helpful in determining what you like! Maybe even send along a short bio of the two of you or meet in person so your photographer can really get to know you before your session. This aids in getting the best, most personal shots.

Fall 2009 Color Report

Sorry I’ve been MIA this week…where has the time gone?
Wedding season is just around the corner and I’m looking forward to it! I’m going to be unrolling some great new features here including local vendors, real weddings and more. Stay tuned.

For now, as I get excited about summer 2009, Pantone’s Fall 2009 Fashion Color Report has come out. For fall brides out there, check out these beautiful colors from burnt sienna, rapture rose, and majolica blue. I love so many of them. A “true red,” “timeless neutrals,” “refinement and sensuality,” a “vibrant blue” and “feminine touches” come out in the colors, many of which look spectacular together.

Wedding Planning Binders

Almost every bride has a binder of all of her wedding related information...this is good. A binder helps you stay organized and keeps everything in one place. There are a ton out there. I think you can purchase one that you're comfortable with and has the tools you need. But remember you want something that will be useful to you, so maybe creating one on your own might be the best option. Here are some of my thoughts on purchasing and making your own...

A couple of planners to mention:
*Mindy Weiss's "Ultimate Wedding Organizer", $99.00
The name says it all--it does have everything and is quite cute to carry, but the price tag is also hefty.
*"The Wedding Workbook" by Kimberly Schlegel Whitman, $24.95
Much more affordable, and also designed really well. It includes many helpful features!
*Real Simple's Wedding Planning Guide is also great. I love Real Simple, so I'm a big fan. Has the great look and style that Real Simple has.

But, I still love , love Russel + Hazel's wedding binder (pictured above) for $75.00. Yes, its pricey, but I think you might feel its worth the investment. It includes 12 sections, business card pages, and adhesive notes for adding notes to the pages. They also have over 50 (!) downloadable lists and worksheets to use! These lists include budget worksheets, a "do not play" list for the DJ, stationary worksheet, floor plans, day-of checklist and more. Love Russel + Hazel!
As I mention above putting together your own binder is also great! A cute and functional place for all of your information and its affordable. Some things you'll need to create your binder:

A sturdy 3-ring binder (you'll use it a lot and carry it with you everywhere for awhile, make sure it will stay together). Russel + Hazel has a wide selection of colors of binders and they're also well-made. There are also quite a few eco-friendly options available and options at your local Target or other store.

Tab divider sheets you can mark with categories. (Flowers, Stationary, Music, Cake/Baker, Reception, Attire, Rehearsal, Honeymoon, etc). You'll probably need at least 12, if not 20.

Sheet protectors for you to put clippings and ideas in (and potentially receipts, keep them all together!). A business card page to keep all of your vendors or potential vendors cards together.
Blank sheets of paper for notes, questions, for vendors, etc.

Downloadable checklists and worksheets from R + H! The budget worksheet is a must! Also the timeline/checklist, day-of checklist, vendor contact list, and others you feel will be helpful to you. (Real Simple also has a few downloadable tools as well if you like their style.

These are the basics and should get you started as an organized bride! You can get as crafty and creative or as simple as you want. The possibilities are endless. Happy Planning!

Your Way = The Only Way that Matters

I’m sending you to another blog for the second time this week…
This coincides perfectly with a conversation I had with a bride and her thoughts on not having favors…she wasn’t feeling it, but also felt like she should or had to have a favor. Alas, we concluded that no one is saying “hmm, I wonder what favor they are going to have” or going to say “wow, they didn’t have a favor” and it was okay if she didn’t have the perfect favor. I stand by the fact that it’s okay not to have favors if you don’t want them. But the pressure about favors, about colors, about every detail is very real for many brides.

This post on the blog A Practical Wedding, “What Happened When I Stopped Reading Wedding Blogs” is perfect. I agree wholeheartedly. It’s hard to not get caught up in “the perfect day” and what society or those 565,000 blogs or sites that I mentioned yesterday are saying to you. It does cause stress, and all for what?

Her advice in the blog is right on. I encourage you to do it your way, and be comfortable in that. If you and your fiancé are happy (your colors, your ceremony, your meal at dinner, your music), that’s what matters. It will be perfect, because it’s what you want. I also encourage brides to take a step back and have evenings of wedding-free fun with their fiancé, especially as the date draws near. Focus on the truly important things (saying “i do” to the partner you’ll spend the rest of your life with), and do it your way, that’s the only way that matters. And in the meantime....in the midst of what feels like about 565,000 wedding blogs and websites out there, her blog really is one that you should check out, the "i do" chronicles.

Yes, I think they'll be happy tears on May 2nd, and probably on May 1st too, if not before (we're cryers, we'll admit it)...but for now we happily chat about honeymoon locations, "will she ever feel ready", confirming vendors and more. And as we chat about every detail, she has blogged her way through her engagement (since December 2007) in a sweet, realistic, entertaining, and meaningful way.

Its a great glimpse into wedding planning, but also life and starting this next chapter after 7 years together. I hope she continues to blog about their celebrations, challenges, and excitement as they begin newlywed-dom. Check out the "i do" chronicles...

Bouquets: After the Wedding?

You carry your bouquet down the aisle, perhaps display it at the reception…but then what do you with it? It’s beautiful, and you’ve considered its every detail for several months—colors, size, style, and more. Maybe you want to keep it and the precious memories that go along with it.

You could consider preserving your bouquet to keep forever. Be sure to hand off your bouquet to someone reliable after the reception, make sure they put it in water overnight and then take it early the following week to the florist for the best results. Check with your florist for recommendations of how or who can preserve your bouquet. You could also get crafty and use the dried petals in a shadow box or similar display with other mementoes from your wedding.

Not so sure about doing the traditional “tossing” of the bouquet (often times a smaller arrangement of similar flowers to your bridal bouquet) to your single-friends all gathered together in a mass as “Single Ladies” plays over the dance floor? I see fewer and fewer brides who want to do this, so what can you do if you don’t want to blindly toss a bouquet?

I love the idea of giving a smaller bouquet, or even your own if you don’t want to keep it, to a special guest. You could say a few words at the reception and give the bouquet to any number of people such as a woman who has meant so much to you, the woman who has been married the longest, or even someone who has been going through a difficult time or recently loss someone close to them. Or you could also give it to a new mother or newly engaged friend. It could also be a special moment to present it to your mother, in thanks, in love, and in excitement of all the future holds. The possibilities are endless. Who would you honor?

I think this is an graceful gesture to honor someone who has meant a lot to you and may fit in with your vision of your reception and friends gathered together better than “all the single ladies…”

Spring has sprung in Bloomington! Daffodills have bloomed this week throughout town and in our yard. And that means that summer will be here before we know it!

Also, if you're looking for a way to wrap up your weekend, We TV's Platinum Weddings is back with a new season starting Sunday night. There are 3 new episodes starting at 10 pm EST.

Think 900 guests, multiple dress changes, thousands of dollars of jewelery (a $30,000 engagement ring), 10,000 orchids...and that's just this Sunday night. Talk about inspiration...or perhaps just a girly indulgence on a Sunday night. Enjoy!

Favors: the icing on the cake?

I’m often asked about trends in favors, good resources, or ideas for favors. I think the most important thing to remember is—don’t have favors just to have favors at your reception. They are not a “must have”! A favor should be something meaningful to the couple (think tree seedlings, a donation in guests honor to a meaningful charity, etc.) or perhaps something edible. More and more couples are doing some type of sweet treat late in the night or for guests to take home. You’re giving your guests something yummy to take home with them and not cluttering their life with something they can never use.

Candy buffets have become more and more popular over the past few years—they could be color themed (all white candy for example), include your favorite candy (a good friend of mine’s fiancé loves chewy runts, the perfect start to their candy bar), or nostalgic candy. I also love homemade treats, or having a baker utilize a favorite family recipe to bake cookies, scones, or dessert bars. These treats perfectly packaged with a short and sweet thank you note could be the perfect ending to your perfect day.

Small cupcakes from your baker, chocolate covered coffee beans or small bags of your favorite coffee, or think local. What’s locally popular? Pizza Express breadsticks in Bloomington, jam from Dillman Farms, or chocolates from the Blu Boys. Or are you a gourmet cook or a foodie? What about olive oil with a custom label. Having a fall wedding? What about caramel apples or mini-loaves of pumpkin bread or muffins? the possibilities really are endless. What do you and your fiance love? Start there.

Is a Coordinator Really Necessary?

I’m often asked why couples would need a wedding planner or coordinator. They remind me that reception sites often have venue coordinators, churches sometimes have staff that assist at the ceremony…so why am I needed? I’m needed because someone needs to be there for the bride and ensure everything runs just as she wishes. My hope is that banquet managers at receptions are ensuring the food is hot, the wait staff is being efficient, and the room is set as we had planned. I'm there to ensure the evening flows as the couple planned, needs are taken care of and everyone can have a good time. A wedding coordinator:

1) Has seen many different weddings in many different ways. She can provide insight, thoughts, and answer your questions, as well as provide valuable local information and recommendations.
2) Will understand exactly what you want from when you wake up on your wedding day to when you leave with your new husband and tuxes have to be returned.
3) Will ensure everything runs smoothly and each detail is taken care of so you can enjoy your day.
4) Will be an advocate if anything goes wrong. She can take care of any problems that arise before you even knew they happened.
5) Will bring your ideas to life. She will listen to you and then take her to-do list from you. She’s not planning your day, just executing it so you can enjoy every minute.
6) Will care about you and your day as much as you do!

So take care of yourself and your sanity, and consider hiring a coordinator to take care of details. I think you’ll realize it was a good investment.

I've finally gotten around to starting my blog to accompany the business I've recently started. My company is love, lillian weddings & events based in Bloomington, Indiana. I'm excited to be venturing down this path and am looking forward to working with great brides, fun clients, and talented vendors and partners. To get started a few snippets about me with more to come very soon:

*I've been planning and coordinating weddings & events for over 5 years now. I was a maid of honor for a dear friend after we graduated from college and she told me what a blessing I was and how helpful I was, always thinking ahead and considering details. Little did I know I would be doing events professionally and for fun 5 years later. I have since worked with budgets large and small, done events across the country, and fallen in love with every aspect of event planning.
*I'm meticulous about what I do.
*I'm blessed to have a wonderful, supportive husband who is very patient and loving. (especially as I consider every detail of my business venture--"this color or that one," "worded this way or that way," "hold on, I'll be there in a second, I have to (fill in the blank with something wedding related.") More on him later...
*I'm also blessed with wonderful friends who are also very talented and have supported me along the path.
*I truly love working with brides and their families to design and execute their special day.
